1. What does OPITO stand for?
OPITO stands for “Offshore Petroleum Industry Training Organization” (UK). OPITO – The Oil & Gas Academy is the industry’s focal point for skills, learning and workforce development. The Academy is a self-sustaining, employer and trade union led organization committed to developing and sustaining a safe, skilled and effective workforce now and in the future. This is achieved by working in collaboration with: industry employers, learning & training providers, education & academia and partnership organizations. OPITO develops standards based on industry demand. By giving individual groups exactly what they need, OPITO has produced leading-edge documents that are recognized world-wide. These standards are not, and never have been, mandatory; they are examples of good practice, as advised by the industry itself If you would like to know about OPITO please refer to www.opito.com 2. I attended my BOSIET (OPITO Approved) Course within the last two years, and now my current employer says that I need to renew my certificate by the third year before I can go offshore again. I am confused. I thought that OPITO Certificates are valid for 4 years, so why is my employer requesting me to go for a refresher if my certificate is still valid?
Although the BOSIET OPITO Certificate is valid for 4 years, operators or the particular country's authority may require a refresher to be done in less than 4 years.
